Pomì finely chopped tomatoes are now even more sustainable thanks to innovative packaging

Casalasco Società Agricola S.p.A. is one of Europe's leading producers and co-packers of tomato-based products and is the first in Europe to use SIG's innovative aseptic packaging for food products, made with packaging material SIGNATURE FULL BARRIER, which is even more sustainable and has so far only been used for beverages. The reduced quantity of polymers used in this packaging solution is linked to renewable plant-based raw materials, certified through the mass balance system, further reducing the packaging's CO2 emissions.
Casalasco recently renewed the visual identity of its iconic tomato brand Pomì and, as part of this restyling, chose SIG's 300g "combiblocCompact" aseptic packaging, with the option of SIGNATURE FULL BARRIER, to produce its finely chopped tomatoes. Thanks to a solid decade-long collaboration, Casalasco already has seven SIG packaging lines in its facilities, making the transition to SIGNATURE FULL BARRIER simple and fast, thanks to highly flexible filling technology.
Fabrizio Fichera, Marketing and Business Development Director at Casalasco Società Agricola S.p.A.: “The transition to SIGNATURE FULL BARRIER allows us to offer our consumers a more sustainable and advantageous packaging solution. We have a strong tradition in producing high-quality, nature-friendly tomato products, and we have always worked ethically and sustainably throughout the entire supply chain. Our collaboration with SIG enables us to always be at the forefront of offering high-quality food, while simultaneously strengthening our commitment to sustainability."
The polymers used in SIGNATURE packaging are entirely plant-based, as they are derived from "tall oil," a byproduct of the paper industry and thus not from an agricultural crop that could be used for food production. All three raw materials that make up the SIGNATURE FULL BARRIER are linked to certified renewable sources through the mass balance system: the paper comes from FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forests and other certified sources; the plant-based polymers are certified according to ISCC PLUS; finally, the ultra-thin aluminum layer that protects against light and oxygen is ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative) certified.
Giovanni Micheletto, SIG Managing Director for Italy and Southeast Europe: “Together with Casalasco, we have reached another important milestone towards a more sustainable European food and beverage market: the launch of the first food product in our carton packs SIGNATURE FULL BARRIER. We will continue to pursue our “Way Beyond Good” mission by working closely with the Casalasco team to package their tomato-based products in the most sustainable way possible."
