POMì L+ JOINS THE 'NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT ASSESSMENT' AND SUPPORTS THE COOKSTOVE PROGRAM IN ...

Project: "Calculation of the carbon footprint of Pomì L+ tomato passata from Consorzio Casalasco del Pomodoro"
Pomì L+, a tomato passata with innovative characteristics and the flagship product of the range from the world's most renowned Italian brand, was the subject of a study to define the Carbon Footprint of the product's entire life cycle (in accordance with ISO 14067:2013).
The project, co-financed by the Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, aimed to calculate the amount of CO2 emitted for the production of Pomì L+ by analyzing all phases, from tomato seed production to product consumption and packaging disposal. The possibilities for reducing CO2 emissions were analyzed across the entire life cycle, identifying several improvement opportunities in which Pomì is investing significant resources. Emissions that could not be further reduced were then neutralized through the purchase of credits to finance greenhouse gas reduction projects.
A concrete example that demonstrates the growing attention Pomì pays to the environment and its constant adherence to the highest quality standards that compel leading European companies to uphold the commitments made upon signing the Kyoto Protocol. Pomì, in fact, in addition to pursuing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, participates in the voluntary market for offsetting CO2 emissions, supporting an important energy efficiency project for the rural communities of Siaya County: Cookstove for Kenya.
With L+, Pomì contributes to the intervention plan for rural households to creation and installation of cookstoves. This method replaces the traditional one, known as the “three-stone fire,” which involves using open fires fueled by virgin biomass or charcoal, producing toxic fumes that create serious health problems for residents in rural areas of Kenya.
The Cookstove project stoves enable a 48% reduction in biomass used for cooking, thereby reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, along with an improvement in air quality and a reduction in related illnesses.
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative also has a positive social impact: the use of these stoves significantly reduces the workload for women and children, who can drastically limit the amount of firewood they need to collect, and substantially lowers the cost families incur for purchasing charcoal.
All socio-economic benefits of the project are Gold Standard certified. On one hand, there's the innovation of a new-generation tomato passata, L+, made with very fresh tomatoes that naturally contain a high amount of lycopene, and on the other, an ethical-social commitment project that combines Pomì's guiding values: high quality, care for the land and environment, and social responsibility.
All of this, together, in a single brand that has always brought the authentic taste of Italian passata and tomatoes to the world.
